Progress OpenEdge Again Ranked the Leading ‘Pure-Play’ Embedded DBMS by IDC

Progress Software has announced that IDC has ranked the award-winning Progress® OpenEdge® business application development platform as the number one pure-play embedded database management system (DBMS) in the world in 2008 for the fifth consecutive year. IDC highlights that the embedded DBMS market in particular fared slightly better than the overall DBMS market in 2009, attributing this to the fact that embedded DBMS sales are linked directly to products delivering immediate business value.

Progress Software Corporation (NASDAQ: PRGS), a provider of leading application infrastructure software to develop, deploy, integrate and manage business applications today announced that IDC has ranked the award-winning Progress® OpenEdge® business application development platform as the number one pure-play embedded database management system (DBMS) in the world in 2008 for the fifth consecutive year, and was ranked this way for each of the six reports that IDC has issued for this market over the years. IDC presented findings in a report released on January 5, 2010: ‘Worldwide Embedded DBMS 2010-2013 Forecast and 2008 Vendor Shares’ (document 221438).

In its report, IDC highlights that the embedded DBMS market in particular fared slightly better than the overall DBMS market in 2009, attributing this to the fact that embedded DBMS sales are linked directly to products delivering immediate business value. The report also noted that the established sales channels of embedded DBMS vendors tend to be somewhat more stable than those sold directly to end user organizations.

Progress Software works with over 1,500 ISVs who develop and deploy their business applications on the Progress OpenEdge platform. OpenEdge has continued to evolve over the last 25 years and today, the embedded DBMS is a key component for many SaaS providers delivering and deploying applications in the cloud. Over 5,000 distinct applications in over 60,000 organizations worldwide are deployed with OpenEdge. Additionally, Progress Application Partners deploy their software at more than 15,000 new sites every year.

Carl Olofson, research vice president for Information Management and Data Integration Software at IDC states, “Progress has been the leading player in the embedded DBMS space for over a quarter century, offering a range of products for ISVs to use in building and deploying their applications.”

“Great applications start with great technology, and we’re proud to be recognized year in, year out as having the best embedded database,” said Bob Palumbo, Vice President, Partner Marketing, Progress Software. “We believe it’s the way we work in close partnership with our partner channel that drives our continued success in the marketplace.”
