Tandberg Data ships LTO-4 HH Fibre Channel Drives

Introduction of LTO-4 Half Height 4Gb Fibre Channel enhances 2U and 4U libraries’ performance in mid-range and enterprise environments

SYDNEY, January 28, 2010. Tandberg Data, the global supplier of data protection solutions, today announced the availability of LTO-4 half height (HH) fibre channel (FC) drives in its StorageLibrary™ family, doubling drive density for up to twice the throughput with 4Gb FC connectivity. With performance of the libraries reaching up to 10.4TB/Hr in a 12 U library, and industry leading power rating for the FC interface, the Tandberg Data StorageLibrary family reaches enterprise capabilities.

“Existing customers can extend the lifespan of their StorageLibrary by easily upgrading to the latest LTO generation, saving customers time and money. The introduction of the new LTO-4 half height FC tape drive gives further testament to Tandberg Data’s commitment to providing customers with the best value and choice,” says Simon Anderson, business unit manager for tape automation, tape drives and media at Tandberg Data. “Even in an economic downturn, data continues to grow and tape is an ideal solution for customers wishing to lower their storage costs. The worldwide tape automation market is estimated at $1.2 billion in 2009 and FC automation accounts for approximately 20%. The new Tandberg Data LTO-4 half height FC tape drive will reduce the cost of implementing a FC storage area network (SAN) and also will be very appealing to MAC users.”

About the StorageLibrary T24 with LTO-4 HH FC Developed specifically for data-intense SMBs, departmental organizations, and midrange enterprises, the StorageLibrary T24 with two LTO-4 HH drive and two 12-cartridge magazines delivers native transfer speeds of 864GB/Hr and total native capacity of 19.2TB in a compact, 2U rackmount enclosure. The StorageLibrary T24 delivers full-featured capabilities as well as user-friendly installation and configuration.

The library allows existing StorageLibrary T24 users with legacy LTO drives to easily swap out their prior-generation LTO drives and install new LTO-4 drives with the library still in its rack. This feature extends users’ hardware investment and dramatically reduces upgrade costs while immediately achieving new levels of capacity and speed with LTO-4 technology. The innovative “upgrade-in-the-field” capability is one of the many benefits of Tandberg Data’s advanced engineering.

About the StorageLibrary T40+ The Tandberg Data StorageLibrary T40+ is a scalable, affordable, and user-friendly tape library. The 4U unit easily scales “on demand” from a 1x24 to a 2x40 tape library with up to two full-height or four half height LTO drives. Up to three StorageLibrary T40+ units can be stacked together to create a 12 U, 114 slot library with capacities up to 182TB. With four LTO-4 HH drives, the space saving 4U library offers up to 64TB of compressed data storage and compressed speeds of 3.5TB/Hr. The StorageLibrary T40+ offers pay-as-you-go scalability –- “Capacity on Demand” -- by offering an easy upgrade path from previous LTO-3 libraries to LTO-4, providing SMBs, departmental users, and midrange enterprises the flexibility to easily adjust storage capacity based on budget and data requirements.

Power consumption and Total Cost of Ownership Tape has evolved into a highly cost-effective, high-capacity backup and archival medium with multiple benefits. In addition to low cost, other primary benefits include portability, reliability and reusability. Tape media can be written, rewritten and safely stored for years. Its steadfast reliability ensures mobility and safeguards companies from disaster. Integrating the Tandberg Data LTO-4 HH FC drive into the StorageLibrary series, with industry leading power rating for fibre channel interface - an average power consumption of 18.7W – creates a lower total cost of ownership and cost per gigabyte.

Pricing and Availability The Tandberg Data StorageLibararies are available through Tandberg Data’s established channel of distributor and reseller partners. All Tandberg Data StorageLibraries come with 3 years warranty. Pricing for the StorageLibrary T24 with LTO-4 Half Height FC Drives starts from A$7,600 or NZ$9,600.
