BRISBANE, April 12. Virgin Blue has outsourced its external email processing to MessageLabs, which will provide the airline with additional anti-virus and anti-spam services.
MessageLabs is the leading provider of managed email security services to businesses worldwide and a key IBM partner.
"We believe MessageLabs provides an effective solution to further protect ourselves during 'the gap', the period between a new email virus being released and the availability of a signature from an Anti-Virus provider," said Virgin Blue's Head of Information Technology, Nick Brant, at the signing of the deal.
He added: "The more we use email to communicate with our customers and they use it to communicate with us, then the more likely it is that we might become the victim of a virus before a suitable signature is available. It’s only a matter of time.
"Online e-commerce companies with a high proportion of consumer customers, such as airlines, financial services and hotels, seem to be particularly at risk of early infection."
The Virgin Blue service was negotiated through MessageLabs’ business partner - IBM Business Resiliency and Continuity Services. The solution will provide the airline with a resilient, responsive and secure business and IT infrastructure that can scale to meet the demands of Virgin Blue's business.
Mr Brant added: “Because computer systems are critical to our operation, we evaluated a number of options in seeking to protect ourselves from possible threats.”
MessageLabs’ Asia Pacific Managing Director, Nick Hawkins, said: “MessageLabs’ service really is revolutionary, in that it catches viruses and spam and detects attempts at online identity theft pro-actively without the need for anti-virus signatures."
Mr Hawkins cited figures published by the UK Government that reinforce MessageLabs’ view that anti-virus software alone cannot tackle the rising problem of email viruses. A Department of Trade and Industry survey revealed that over half of all firms and 68 per cent of large companies were infected by viruses during 2003, despite 99 per cent of firms indicating that they used anti-virus software.
“However, no MessageLabs client has been infected by an Internet email-delivered virus since the company launched,” said Mr Hawkins. "That's a great track record."
Traditional anti-virus companies need to update their signatures when a new virus is detected. This usually takes time, leaving a window of opportunity in which viruses and mass-mailing worms can spread globally at high speed. By contrast, MessageLabs’ patented heuristic engine, Skeptic, detects even new threats immediately.
