Mind-mapping clears path to Lihir Islanders’ destiny

Indigenous culture plus modern technology equals good outcome

The use of mind-mapping software application MindManager 9 has enabled stakeholders to agree upon the destiny of inhabitants of Lihir Island, site of one of the world’s richest gold deposits.

Also known as Niolam Island, at 22 km by 14 km, it is the largest of the Lihir Islands situated off the Papa New Guinean coast in New Ireland Province.

At a recent conference in Cairns, ‘The Lihir Destiny’ was discussed between landowner leaders, local and national Government, senior managers from the gold mining company and other stakeholders. The conference was facilitated by Mindsystems, represented by John England, founder and Executive Director, and Zoe England, CEO.

Its aim was to establish clear agreement on the way to develop a sustainable future for Lihirian landowners when the mines closes . The blueprint for these discussions was represented by a concept called ‘The Lihir Destiny’ which outlines the landowners’ social and economic development. The situation offers an opportunity for the traditional land owners to fund both personal and business development on the island from the royalties and other payments made by the mining company.

The tool chosen by Mindsystems to both brainstorm and organise the wealth of knowledge from participants was Mindjet MindManager 9. This proved to be ideal for knowledge capture and the subsequent rearrangement of the captured information.

John England said: “The discussions were so complex that I do not know of any other technique which would have allowed us to record, chart and group the huge amount of important knowledge and comment generated during the conference.”

The outcomes were twofold:

1. All aspects of the Lihir Destiny discussed at the conference were eventually summarised as individual mind maps. These maps included clear responsibilities and action points for all aspects of the ‘Destiny’.

2. A comprehensive document was generated covering the future development and agreements and signed by all participants at the conference representing both the landowners, the Lihirian Government, the mining company and other stakeholders.

One of the participants commented: “This conference achieved everything we could have reasonably hoped for.”
