Raritan today announced it was selected as a winner of the prestigious 2010 Green Enterprise IT (GEIT) Awards presented by the Uptime Institute. The GEIT Awards showcase organisations that are pioneering energy-efficiency improvements in their IT and data centre operations, or that provide technology that can significantly reduce energy consumption.
Raritan won the "Outstanding IT Product" category for its Power IQ® Energy Management Software and PX intelligent power distribution units (iPDUs) with plug-and-play environment sensors. Winners were announced at the Uptime Institute Symposium in New York City.
The Raritan solution provides valuable insights on data centre power usage. Power IQ software collects and analyses energy data of IT equipment connected to Raritan's PX intelligent PDUs and third-party Ethernet-enabled rack PDUs, as well as information from temperature and humidity sensors .
"Raritan's power management solution won the juried award that recognises an outstanding product for improving data centre energy efficiency in a client installation case study," said W. Pitt Turner IV, PE, Executive Director, Uptime Institute. "Comprised of Power IQ software and PX PDUs, the Raritan solution at J.R. Simplot's 500-server data centre demonstrates how intelligent energy management technologies -- which measure and track energy usage at the device level -- can help customers achieve a better understanding of how and where their data centres consume energy, and, as a result, can take steps to become more energy efficient." As part of a major data centre upgrade, food and agribusiness conglomerate J.R. Simplot created a green data centre based on data centre energy efficiency standards -- including PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness), DCIE (Data Centre Infrastructure Efficiency) and RCI (Rack Cooling Index). The data centre upgrade project also involved increasing rack density and transitioning from 120 to 240 volts AC power for greater power efficiency and to provide more power to the racks.
Raritan's energy management solution provided J.R. Simplot with a number of key capabilities including: power monitoring of individual IT devices, environmental monitoring, the ability to generate sophisticated and accurate power usage reports, and advanced analytics. Reports, which can be organised by department, equipment type or location, are regularly provided to the firm's dedicated environmental staff and show that the data centre team is doing its part to support the corporate Green initiative. "Our upgraded data centre has resulted in increased electrical efficiencies, overall redundancy and visibility to power and environmental details that lets us know how our data centre is performing," said Jo McCarthy, IT Enterprise Architect at J.R. Simplot. "As a result, we are on track to reducing 25 percent of our energy consumption, calculated by total energy per unit of production. Raritan's solution is also helping us manage data centre capacity by providing real-time and trended power consumption information, which enables us to make better use of existing capacity and eliminate the need to rely on nameplate data and assumptions."
The Uptime Institute’s 2010 Green Enterprise IT Awards were cosponsored by Jones Lang LaSalle and New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). Applications for the Awards were evaluated by an independent panel of expert judges selected by the Institute.
Raritan's data centre energy management products also won Green IT Awards presented by Green IT Magazine in London last month. Raritan won the 2010 Green IT Award in the ‘Hardware Product of the Year’ category for its Dominion® PX iPDU, and received a runner-up award in the 'Minister of Energy' category for its Power IQ™ energy management software .
