United Overseas Bank (UOB) has become the first organisation in Southeast Asia to adopt VMware Cloud on Amazon Web Services (AWS) for the bank’s hybrid cloud infrastructure.
The Singapore-based business will leverage the offering to support its digital innovation journey as it fast-tracks innovation and application development.

“VMware Cloud on AWS provides a fast and cost-effective way to migrate mission-critical applications, or even entire data centres, to the cloud.
"Once in the cloud, we provide software-defined data centre capabilities of VMware, coupled with the elasticity, breadth, and depth of AWS infrastructure and services, making it the ideal platform for modern applications."
The new platform has been jointly developed by VMware and AWS in compliance with UOB’s strict security requirements, and will enable applications deployed in this environment to benefit from robust disaster protection and optimised access to AWS’ wide range of services.
Furthermore, the cost and effort associated with migrating applications to the cloud is also reduced, according to VMware, by delivering infrastructure and operations that are consistent with those deployed within customer data centres, and extending tools, processes, and practices proven to support demanding applications.

VMware Cloud on AWS aims to bring a new scale to the country’s transformation journey as businesses now have access to the vendor’s enterprise class software-defined data centre to the AWS Cloud with the same architecture and operational experience.
Furthermore, based on VMware Cloud Foundation, this hybrid cloud service is designed to deliver consistent infrastructure and simplified operations from the data centre to the cloud, enabling customers to migrate to the cloud, scale on demand and deliver on next-generation application strategies.
Recent enhancements to this service include, improvements to disaster-recovery-as-a-service aimed at delivering protection for large-scale and storage intensive workloads, while at the same time reducing the cost and complexity previously required to ensure the business continuity of mission-critical applications, cyclic workloads and Next Gen apps.
The service has also been enhanced to support large-scale, secure cloud migrations and application portability globally, enabling customers to more rapidly and reliably migrate applications and extend data centres to the cloud.
VMware recently appointed Uma Thana Balasingam as vice president of Partner Business across Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ), recruiting the channel veteran from Riverbed.
Balasingam is tasked with driving the vendor’s regional channel strategy, taking control of an ecosystem housing solution providers, distributors, OEMs and telecommunications partners across the APJ region.
