Datto has appointed Tim Weller as new CEO, replacing founder Austin McChord who transitioned away from the day-to-day management of the company in late 2018.

Weller has served as interim leader of the vendor’s executive team over the past two months, with the new appointment effective immediately.

“We remain committed to serving the MSP [managed service provider] community as we grow,” Weller said.

“I look forward to working with Austin, the rest of the board, and the entire Datto team as we create open, partner-centric solutions and reimagine products for MSPs globally.”

Since joining Datto in June 2017, Weller has served as CFO, president and then COO, leading daily operations while also establishing global go-to-market strategies.

Weller also played a “pivotal role” in the merger of Datto and Autotask, which was first announced to the market in October 2017.

As reported by ARN, Datto was acquired by Vista Equity Partners, an investment firm focused on software, data and technology-enabled businesses.

Consequently, the vendor then came under the same roof as Autotask, which has been owned by Vista since June 2014, combining back-up and disaster recovery solutions with IT service management capabilities.

“We are excited for this next phase in Datto’s growth and we are confident that Tim is the right candidate to lead the company and to continue its industry leadership through strategic growth and MSP-centric innovation,” added Nadeem Syed, operating principal at Vista.

“Tim’s extensive global leadership experience with public and private companies, combined with his deep technical and financial expertise make him a natural fit to help the company continue to scale and grow.”

Prior to joining Datto, Weller held several C-level roles over the past two decades, including the CFO position at two Boston-based public companies, one of which was Akamai.

“Tim and I worked every day, side by side, for the last 18 months as we grew Datto,” said McChord, now speaking as a board member of Datto. “I’m happy to see Tim lead the company moving forward.

“Tim understands Datto’s values and unique culture and lives it everyday. I am confident that under Tim’s leadership Datto will continue to grow and prosper.

“Most importantly, he is passionate about the MSP community as a whole and truly believes in their role going forward. Datto is in good hands with Tim.”
