Singapore has launched its first software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) services based on VMware NSX SD-WAN by VeloCloud.
As a joint initiative between VMware and SP Telecom, the new SD-WAN services will provide businesses with the ability to automate and prioritise business-critical traffic to travel over faster, more secure connections, as well as set back-up options for downed traffic links.
These new services will provide regional businesses with a low latency wide-area network that is automated and infrastructure-independent, to deliver more secure networking services aided by SP Telecom’s network management and consultancy services.

Furthermore, the optimisation of high traffic volume that enables near real-time access to rapidly changing data, is a key benefit for mission-critical industries such as telecommunications, financial services, and the media and entertainment verticals.
The combined solution of VMware’s NSX SD-WAN and SP Telecom’s data network also provides support for virtualised services from the cloud, connecting branch offices and mobile users to any type of data centres such as enterprise, cloud, or software-as-a-service.
Other benefits include greater bandwidth as well as provide optimal connectivity and access to the cloud and on-premises, in addition to accelerate new site deployments through zero-touch automated deployment.

SP Telecom’s data network has network paths that run along the Singapore power grid, enabling network resiliency for business-critical functions.
Furthermore, this data network is enhanced with low latency performance for more efficient processes. This reduces the risk of outage that could occur due to power or active equipment failure.
Part of its network consultancy services, SP Telecom analyses and optimises the network to deliver cost savings and efficiency.
The connectivity and consultancy services, bundled with the new SD-WAN offering, will enable businesses to innovate fast and more securely by delivering robust performance for cloud applications, claims the provider.
The vendor’s SD-WAN solution provides an extensible platform for enterprises and telcos to integrate both on-premise and cloud services under the same consistent business policy framework.
While historically, VMware has leveraged its partners in the SD-WAN space, such as VeloCloud, Silver Peak, CloudGenix and Versa, in 2017, that changed with the purchase of VeloCloud, providing a greater challenge to industry players like Cisco.
The vendor is also planning a greater focus on partners in 2019 with a complete overhaul of its partner program expected by May, with a focus on simplifying partner engagement.
